Answer
Mileage Types
You can select the following mileage types in SterlingTMS:
- Shortest Distance
Calculates the distance based on the fewest number of milesfrom the origin to the destination. This is the shortest legal routebut it might include impractical business routes or weight-restrictedroutes.
- Practical Distance
Takes into account weight restrictions road quality and metropolitanareas when calculating the distance. This is often the fastest legalroute although it might not be the shortest.
- HAZMAT Distance
Calculates the distance based on government-sanctioned hazardousmaterial routes.
- Household Goods Distance (HHG)
Calculates the distance based on the routes that are authorizedin the Household Goods Carriers' Bureau Committee Official TransportationMileage Guide.
You can select this option when you use MileMakeras your mileage source.
- Explosive
Calculates the distance based on the routes that are authorizedfor delivering explosive freight.
You can select this optionwhen you use PC Miler as your mileage source.
The Mileage Type field givesyou more flexibility over how you define your contracts with yourcarriers.
For example:
- You define different contract sections for fleets that use ShortestMiles and Practical Miles.
- You assign different rates to the lanes in each section.
Default Mileage Source Configuration
Bydefault Sterling TMS hasconfigured the mileage sources to calculate routes based on the closedborders option:
- If your organization uses PC Miler and requires the BordersOpen setting contact Sterling TMS Customer Support. This setting can be enabled for specific shippers.
- Sterling TMS doesnot support the Canadian Borders Open settingin MileMaker.
Sterling TMS alsodoes not support other mileage source attributes such as the PC Miler HighwayOnly setting. When shippers renew their contracts withcarriers they must define distance-based agreements that are supportedby the Sterling TMS configuration.
Shortest Distance
The ShortestMileage Type calculates the distance based on the fewestnumber of miles or kilometers from the origin to the destination.
Thisis the shortest legal route but it might include impractical businessroutes or weight-restricted routes.
Shippers usually choosethis mileage type for a contract if it is not critical that the shipmentsarrive as quickly as possible.
Practical Distance
The PracticalMileage Type is often the fastest legal route althoughit might not be the shortest.
This option takesweight restrictions road quality and metropolitan areas into accountwhen calculating the distance.
Shippers usually choose thismileage type for a contract if it is critical that the shipments arriveas quickly as possible.
HAZMAT Distance
This MileageType option calculates the distance based on government-sanctionedhazardous material routes.
In addition to specifying HAZMAT asthe mileage type a shipper can also add these features to a contract:
- A standard accessorial that adds a HAZMAT surcharge to cover increasedrisk and insurance costs. For example the accessorial could calculatethe surcharge as 3 percent of the linehaul rate.
- A contract or accessorial attribute. For example an attributecould be used to apply a placard charge for placing HAZMAT signs onthe trailer.
When a HAZMAT shipment is processed in Execution SterlingTMS applies these charges if this contract is used for the shipment.
Household Goods Distance
HouseholdGoods (HHG) is a Mileage Type option. You canselect this option when you use MileMaker as your mileage source.
MileMakercalculates the distance based on the routes that are authorized inthe Household Goods Carriers' Bureau Committee Official TransportationMileage Guide.
MileMaker calculates the shortest distance betweentwo locations using routes that are supported by the HHG rules.
