Resolving The Problem
Symptom
*** STOP: 0x0000007F (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP ***
If you see this STOP message, a trap has occurred in kernel mode. This is a Windows NT Executive character-mode STOP message. This error means a trap occurred in kernel mode, either a kind of trap that the kernel is not allowed to have or catch (a bound trap), or a kind of trap that is always instant death (double fault).
Possible causes:
- This may indicate a problem with the system's RAM (for example, mismatched, faulty, or incompatible DIMMs).
- There may be a BIOS problem.
- There may be corrupted file system drivers.
Parameter1:
The first parameter is the number of the trap (8 = double fault). To learn more about what these traps are, consult an Intel x86 family manual.
Actions
- Make sure that the system BIOS, device drivers and device firmware are at the latest levels.
- Make sure that all memory is IBM compatible and is installed correctly. Remove any third party memory.
- Check the system for Light-Path diagnostic errors.
- Check the system error logs in Setup for failing component notifications.
- Run System Diagnostics.
If a kernel debugger is available, a KB and !TRAP on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken.
NOTE: On x86 machines, the appropriate frame is the EBP that goes with a procedure named KiTrap.
- If this is the first time you have booted after installing new hardware, remove the hardware and boot again.
- Check the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the hardware and its drivers are compatible with Windows NT.
- If you are installing Windows NT for the first time, check the Windows NT system requirements, including the amount of RAM and disk space required to load the operating system.
- Also, check the Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the system can run Windows NT.
- If Windows NT is loaded and no new hardware has been installed, reboot with recovery options set to create a dump file.
- If the message continues to appear, select the Last Known Good option when you reboot.
- If there is no Last Known Good configuration, try using the Emergency Repair Disk.
- If you do not have an Emergency Repair Disk, contact your technical support group.
