Problem

Servers and IntelliStation: Microsoft Windows 2000/NT 4.0 error message "0x77: KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR" may indicate that an I/O error has occurred.

Resolving The Problem

Symptom

*** STOP: 0x00000077 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR ***

If you see this STOP message, an I/O error has occurred. This is a Windows NT Executive character-mode STOP message. It indicates an I/O error during a kernel stack paging operation. The requested page of kernel data could not be read in. This error is normally caused by a bad block in the paging file or by a disk controller error. If the error is a result of a paging error, AUTOCHK will attempt to map out the bad block upon rebooting the system.

The symptoms are revealed by the values found in the parameters, as follows:

  1. Scenario 1: Bad hardware
  • Parameter1 = 0x000000000
  • Parameter2 = 0x000000000
  • Parameter3 = PTE value at time of error
  • Parameter4 = Address of signature on kernel stack
  1. Scenario 2: Various possibilities; see the "Actions" section below.
  • Parameter1 = Status code
  • Parameter2 = I/O status code
  • Parameter3 = Page file number
  • Parameter4 = Offset into page file

Actions

Make note of the parameters after the STOP code, specifically 'parameter1' and 'parameter2', and evaluate them as follows:

  1. Scenario 1
    • If the first and second parameters are both 0 (that is, 0x00000000), the stack signature in the kernel stack was not found. This error is caused by bad hardware.
    • Check the IBM F1 error logs for failing components.
    • Run diagnostics on the system.
    • Run the "winmsd" command to check for resource conflicts.
  2. Scenario 2
    • If the second parameter (I/O status code) is 0xC000009C (STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR) or 0xC000016AL (STATUS_DISK_OPERATION_FAILED), then this normally indicates that data could not be read from the disk due to a bad block on the drive.
      • When your system is rebooted, Autocheck will run and attempt to find and map out the bad sector.
    • If the second parameter (I/O status code) is 0xC0000185 (STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR) and the paging file is on a SCSI disk device, then SCSI cabling and termination should be checked.
      • The error is indicating improper termination of a SCSI device, bad SCSI cabling, or two devices attempting to use the same SCSI ID, or IRQ.
    • If the second parameter (I/O status code) is 0xC0000009A (STATUS INSUFFICIENT RESOURCES), it indicates the system running out of resources, specifically, the nonpaged pool. (this is extremely rare).

If you are getting Light-Path diagnostic errors or other hardware errors on boot up, check the F1 error logs and run diagnostics.

  • If this is the first time you have booted after installing new hardware, remove the hardware and boot again.
  • Check the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the hardware and its drivers are compatible with Windows NT.
  • If you are installing Windows NT for the first time, check the Windows NT system requirements, including the amount of RAM and disk space required to load the operating system.
  • Also, check the Hardware Compatibility List to verify that the system can run Windows NT.
  • If Windows NT is loaded and no new hardware has been installed, reboot with recovery options set to create a dump file.
  • If the message continues to appear, select the Last Known Good option when you reboot.
  • If there is no Last Known Good configuration, try using the Emergency Repair Disk.
  • If you do not have an Emergency Repair Disk, contact your technical support group.
