Symptom
When using the Microsoft High Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster Manager, environmental variables for a task will not take effect.
For example:
- In Cluster Manager Graphical User Interface (GUI) mode, after loading a saved XML file, the environment variables for a task will not take effect and the file cannot be deleted.
- When creating a new job from the description file, in the Job Management Task List section, editing the environment variables for a specific task will appear to succeed, but there will be no reflection of the changes if the user submits or saves the task.
Affected configurations
The system is configured with at least one of the following:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Datacenter 64-bit, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Enterprise 64-bit, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Standard 64-bit, any service pack
This tip is not hardware specific.
This tip is not option specific.
The Microsoft HPC Cluster Manager utility is affected.
Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Using an XML editor or a text editor, edit the XML file to remove the variable tags and everything contained within the variable tags, as shown below:

Additional information
The issue appears only when variables have previously been saved in the task list field and they are being submitted or saved for a second time.
The Workaround edits the file itself and does not use the GUI to edit the file.
