Micron DDR3 memory module indicates over temperature after system is powered on - IBM System x

Troubleshooting

Problem

After the system powers on, Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) on the light path diagnostics panel indicate that memory modules are over temperature. The event log in the Integrated Management Module (IMM) also shows memory over temperature errors.

Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H203417

Symptom

After the system powers on, Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) on the light path diagnostics panel indicate that memory modules are over temperature. The event log in the Integrated Management Module (IMM) also shows memory over temperature errors.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3550 M2, type 7946, any model
  • System x3550 M3, type 7944, any model
  • System x3650 M2, type 7947, any model
  • System x3650 M3, type 7945, any model
  • iDataPlex dx360 M3 Server, type 6391, any model

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • 2 GB (Dual-Rank x8) PC3-10600 DDR3 1333 MHz Chipkill LP RDIMM, Option part number 44T1481, replacement part number 44T1491
  • 4 GB PC3-10600 CL9 ECC DDR3 1333 MHz Chipkill LP RDIMM, Option part number 44T1483, replacement part number 44T1493

This tip is not software specific.

Workaround

In this rare instance, the memory modules are not actually over temperature. Follow these steps to reset the temperature sensor reading:

  1. Power off the system.
  2. Unplug the AC power cord.
  3. Reconnect the AC power cord to the power source.
  4. Power the system back on.

Additional information

The over temperature warnings issued by the system are the result of temperature sensor readings on the Dual In-Line Memory Modules (DIMMs).

In some rare situations, the temperature sensor on the Dual In-Line Memory Module (DIMM) might not be properly initialized during power-up and can cause the erroneous temperature warning.

When the erroneous temperature warning shows, it will not affect the system operation and performance. The temperature sensor on the DIMMs will become normal after following the procedure in the workaround. There is no need to replace the DIMMs.
