Summary
Provide different options for backing up the SMS SCDS and describe the pros and cons of each method.
Steps
There are 3 methods that can be used to back up the SMS SCDS.
1) SETSMS SAVESCDS:
a. This command is a simple console command.
b. The backup copy of the SCDS must be defined before the command is issued.
c. This command takes a copy of your ACTIVE configuration and copies it to the SCDS data set that you defined.
d. The output is an SCDS that can be immediately used in ISMF .
2) IDCAMS REPRO:
a. You can define the SCDS backup data set and do the REPRO in a single job.
b. The output is an SCDS that can be immediately used in ISMF.
3) DFSMSdss DUMP:
a. This command simply makes a backup copy of the SCDS. It must be restored before it can be used.
b. The target data set is NOT usable in ISMF. A restore is required.
