MessageSizeExceedLimitOnClient error occurs randomly on the Filenet Business Process Manager Process Engine

Troubleshooting

Problem

The Process Engine VWKs processes may crash or the Process Engine clients can get various ORB errors, such as fetchWorkflowDefinition exceptions. The vwtool trace with the ORB options shows MARSHAL_MessageSizeExceedLimitOnClient exceptions

Symptom

  • Enable the Process Engine vwtool trace with the vwtrace [ Ks (2), ORB (25,y,y,y) ] options. You will see the following kind of log entries:
    • (9306444.772 VWKs.1) Region=100 ORB omniORB: (3) throw MARSHAL from giopImpl12.cc:2014 (YES,MARSHAL_MessageSizeExceedLimitOnClient)
11/05/12 13:58:14.138 (9306444.772 VWKs.1) Region=100 ORB omniORB: (3) To endpoint: giop:tcp:10.7.17.28:47527. Send GIOP 1.2 MessageError because a protocol error has been detected. Connection is closed.
  • Enable tracing or the java console on the Process Engine client. You may see the following kinds of entries:
    • 2011/04/29 12:35:29 [filenet.pa.publisher.Publisher - 1] DEBUG exception THROWING
org.omg.CORBA.COMM_FAILURE: vmcid: 0x41540000 minor code: 7 completed: Maybe
