Troubleshooting
Problem
When profiling a large application (such as WAS) with Memory Analysis, data will usually not be received, and the application itself will crash or terminate after some number of minutes (using the IBM Rational Agent Controller).
Symptom
When profiling a large application using memory analysis profiling, using the v8.1.x and v8.2.x IBM Rational Agent Controllers, with the 'enabled' command line parameter, the following symptoms may occur:
- Once the workbench attaches to the profiling agent and begins monitoring, the workbench does not receive any data. That is, the workbench says it is collecting, but no data appears in the memory view.
- The application being profiled becomes entirely unresponsive, and trying to connect to the application (in our case, using a browser to request pages from the server) generates an error.
- CPU usage of the Java process is at 100% (e.g. it is maxed out)
- Application being profiled crashes after a minute or two have elapsed. (In other tests, the JVM has merely terminated prematurely, rather than crashing, or has thrown java.lang.VerifyError)
This issue will likely affect all IBM Rational Agent Controller platforms, and has been specifically demonstrated to fail with Websphere Application Server v7 (WAS) on Windows and z/OS
