Media Access Control (MAC) address of Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) is incorrect - IBM Servers

Troubleshooting


Problem

Advanced Settings Utility (ASU) cannot set the internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) Media Access Control (MAC) address. This behavior can be found when following these steps: Add iSCSI Attempt1 (bound with Network Interface Controller-1 (NIC1) MAC) and Attempt2 (bound with Network Interface Controller-2 (NIC2) MAC) in the iSCSI Configuration page of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Setup menu. Check iSCSI NIC1 and NIC2 MAC addresses by moving cursor to Attempt1 and Attempt2. Change the iSCSI NIC1 and NIC2 addresses by using the following ASU commands: ASU set iSCSI.MacAddress.1 ASU set iSCSI.MacAddress.2 Reboot the system and check iSCSI.AttemptName[1-2] MAC address. The MAC addresses are all changed to NIC1 MAC.

Symptom

Advanced Settings Utility (ASU) cannot set the internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) Media Access Control (MAC) address. This behavior can be found when following these steps:

1. Add iSCSI Attempt1 (bound with Network Interface Controller-1 (NIC1) MAC) and Attempt2 (bound with Network Interface Controller-2 (NIC2) MAC) in the iSCSI Configuration page of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Setup menu.
2. Check iSCSI NIC1 and NIC2 MAC addresses by moving cursor to Attempt1 and Attempt2.
3. Change the iSCSI NIC1 and NIC2 addresses by using the following ASU commands:

  1. ASU set iSCSI.MacAddress.1 <NIC2 MAC Address>
  2. ASU set iSCSI.MacAddress.2 <NIC1 MAC Address>
4. Restart the system and check iSCSI.AttemptName[1-2] MAC address.

The MAC addresses are all changed to NIC1 MAC.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3100 M4, type 2582, any model
  • System x3200 M3, type 7327, any model
  • System x3200 M3, type 7328, any model
  • System x3250 M3, type 4251, any model
  • System x3250 M3, type 4252, any model
  • System x3250 M3, type 4261, any model
  • System x3250 M4, type 2583, any model
  • System x3400 M3, type 7378, any model
  • System x3400 M3, type 7379, any model
  • System x3500 M3, type 7380, any model
  • System x3550 M3, type 4254, any model
  • System x3550 M3, type 7944, any model
  • System x3650 M3, type 4255, any model
  • System x3650 M3, type 7945, any model
  • iDataPlex dx360 M3 Server, type 6391, any model

This tip is not software specific.

This tip is not option specific.

The following system BIOS or UEFI level(s) are affected:

  • D6E157A
  • GYE157A
  • HSE121A
  • JQE140AUS
  • P9E157A
  • TME157B
  • Y4E157A

The system has the symptom described above.

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release of UEFI firmware.

The target date for this release is scheduled for second quarter 2013.

Workaround

Keep the iSCSI MAC address in the UEFI default settings.

Additional information

The current UEFI firmware behavior causes the incorrect ASU setting for iSCSI MAC address.
