Mean and covariance structure selection for mixed models

Troubleshooting

Problem

I'm using the SPSS MIXED procedure to estimate a mixed model. I know that I need to select an appropriate covariance structure as well as the appropriate mean structure, and am not sure how to go about doing this. Fitting all possible combinations of mean and covariance structures and comparing them on a selection criterion such as the AIC would take too much time. Is there a defensible method that's more feasible?
