Max Value not Shown in RTM Daily Graph

Question & Answer

Question

Why is max cpu utilization not shown in RTM Grid CPU Utilization graph?  The caption shows that max > Avg so shouldn't it be visible in the graph?
cluster cpu utilization no max

Answer

The minimum data point saved in RTM graph rrd file is 1 data point per 5 mins.

So in Daily view (5 Minute Avg) graph, since there is only 1 data point involved, the average always equal to max, so they overlap, that is why yellow area is invisible.

But in Weekly, monthly and yearly view, as there are more data points involved, the areas no longer overlap (see the screenshots below).

For example, weekly view shows 30mins average, and there are 6 data points (DP) involved (six 5-minute data points = one 30min data point), so it's very likely the max (of 6 DP) > avg (6DP), that's why you will see the difference in graph as the yellow area higher than the blue one.

While the caption displays the max over the whole day/week/month/year, so it should always be greater than avg over the whole day/week/month/year.

Weekly and monthly graph will show max
