MAPI sessions are not closed on Exchange Server 2003

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote documents an issue when using MAPI for the mail protocol, that the IBM® Rational® ClearQuest® Web server does not close the MAPI sessions on the Microsoft® Exchange 2003 server. This can cause many open sessions to remain on the Exchange server.

Resolving The Problem

This issue can occur after upgrading from Exchange 5.5 to the Exchange 2003 server.

The Exchange 2003 server has a limit of 32 open sessions for a single user. When this limit is hit, email notification might cease to execute. The old exchange server 5.5 does not have limit on how many times we can call MAPI session concurrently.

This issue has been identified as a defect in ClearQuest. It is being tracked by its APAR number IC46502.

As a workaround for this issue, use the SMTP protocol with the Exchange server, as this issue does not occur with the SMTP protocol.
