ls -la of directory with more than 200 elements causes data underflow error

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote identifies an issue that can occur in IBM Rational ClearCase when using RedHat 3 Update 8 or 9 kernel where the command 'ls -la' run in a view private or source controlled directory containing more than 200 elements will fail with an I/O error.

Symptom

Using RedHat 3 Update 8 or 9 kernel running the command ls -la within a view private or source controlled directory containing more than 200 elements fails with an I/O error.

ls -la also causes the following error to be logged in the MVFS log:

49e48cc7 mvfs: Error: mvfs_linux_xdr_getbytes: data underflow
49e48cc7 mvfs: Error: View op readdir failed for myserver.com:/my_view_storage/my_view.vws -  Cannot decode results

Listing all files in the directory using the operating system ls command does not report any error or output at all.

Directories with less than 200 elements are not affected.

At the same time running a cleartool ls or operating system ls <filename> commands work as expected.
