LPAR won't boot on Power 8 Machine

Troubleshooting

Problem

After moving an LPAR to a Power 8 Machine the LPAR won't boot

Cause

This is mainly caused because the LPAR has been recently migrated to a Power 8 Machine and does not meet the minimum requirements of a Power 8 Machine

Diagnosing The Problem

This issue is usually pointed out after collecting a boot debug the boot debug will look similar to the snippet below
LED{814}
LED{A20}
Illegal Trap Instruction Interrupt in Kernel
.jfs_rootinit+000320 tweq r14,r14
r14=0000000000000074 <== this error indicates that the OS level does not meet the minimum level required by the Power 8 Machine

Resolving The Problem

This issue cannot be resolved on a Power 8 Machine the minimum supported level has to met before migrating the LPAR to a Power 8 Machine. So the LPAR has to be migrated back to the previous Power Machine and perform an upgrade to any of the levels listed below

The minimum supported levels for the Power 8 Machines are

  • AIX 6.1
    1. Technology Level 7 Service Pack 6 or higher
    2. Technology Level 8 Service Pack 1 or higher
