Long delays (slow performance) and "Microsoft Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action" when trying to open Data Entry form

Troubleshooting


Problem

User clicks "Company - Data Entry - Reported Values". User fills in the parameter choice screen. User waits for the 'open' button to be active. This may take some time (for example 2 minutes). User then clicks 'Open'. Nothing appears to happen. Eventually a Microsoft Excel icon appears on the taskbar. After a few minutes, a "Microsoft Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action" message appears on the screen. If the user clicks OK, then nothing appears to happen. After a few more minutes of waiting, the data entry form eventually opens (for example approximately 10 minutes after initially clicking the 'open' button.
