Location Docks - Add Dock Usage Rule
Use the Location Docks - Add or Edit Dock Usage Rule pageto set up a rule to control who can make appointments at this dock.You can also specify which types of shipments can be picked up ordelivered at this dock.
Exclusive and Restrictive Usage Rules
Whenyou define a dock usage rule you must select the Type.The entries that appear in the Type field changebased on the Rule Type you selected on theDock Usage Rules page:
- Exclusive Use
If you set the Rule Type to ExclusiveUse on the Dock Usage Rules page the Type fieldis automatically set to Exclusive Use.
The ExclusiveUse option lets you set up a dock that only specific carrierssuppliers or customers can use.
For example you might wantto reserve a loading dock for trucks from your largest retailer.
- Restrictive Use
- If you set the Rule Type to RestrictiveUse on the Dock Usage Rules page you can set the Type fieldto one of these options:
- Must use
- The carriers suppliers or customers specified in the rule mustuse this dock when making pickups or deliveries at this location.They cannot make appointments for other docks at this location.
- Cannot Use
- The carriers suppliers or customers specified in the rule cannotmake an appointment at this dock.
Filters for Dock Usage Rules
You can definethe following filters for a dock usage rule:
- Origin
Specify an origin if you want to restrict this rule to shipmentsthat are being delivered from the origin to this dock.
For exampleyou might require that trucks use this receiving dock to unload shipmentsfrom your Chicago manufacturing plant.
After you select an originyou can click the Origin link to view detailsabout that location.
- Destination
Specify a destination if you want to restrict this rule toshipments that are being picked up at this dock and then deliveredto the destination.
For example you might require that carriersuse this shipping dock if they are picking up shipments to be deliveredto your Cleveland distribution center.
After you select a destinationyou can click the Destination link to viewdetails about that location.
- Carrier
Select a carrier if you want the dock usage rule to apply toa single carrier.
For example you might want to specify thata certain carrier cannot make appointments at this dock.
Afteryou select a carrier you can click the Carrier linkto view details about that organization.
Tip: If youwant to set up a rule for multiple carriers leave the Carrier fieldblank and select a group of carriers under the Member List column.- SCAC
If you select a carrier for the rule you can restrict therule to a specific SCAC.
For example you might want to specifythat the refrigerated tanker fleet for your carrier must use thisdock.
By default the standard SCAC for the carrier is selected.
- Mode
Select a transportation mode if you want to restrict the ruleto that mode.
For example you could define different dock usagerules for truckload LTL or parcel shipments.
- Priority
Select a shipment priority if you want to restrict the dockto shipments with that priority. Each Sterling TMS shipper definesits own shipment priorities.
For example you could set up adock that is only used for high-priority shipments.
After youselect a priority you can click the Priority linkto view details about this entry.
- Movement Type
Select a movement type such as Outbound or Interplantif you want to restrict the dock to shipments that use that movementtype.
For example you might want to reserve a dock for interplantshipments between this location and another facility owned by yourorganization.
Member Lists for Dock Usage Rules
You canassign a member list to a dock usage rule. The rule will apply toall the carriers suppliers or customers in the list.
To assigna member list to the rule follow these steps:
- Click Add
to add a row.
- Set the Role to Carrier Customer Supplieror Partner.
- Select an entry from the Member List orclick Create
to define a member list.
- Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to add another member list to the rule.For example you could set up one dock usage rule that applies toboth customers and suppliers.
Reference Fields for Dock Usage Rules
Youcan assign a reference field to this dock usage rule. This rule willonly apply to shipments that have that reference field and value.
Forexample you might want to reserve this dock for shipments that usethe same Export Reference Number.
To assign a reference fieldto the rule follow these steps:
- Click Add
to add a row.
- Select a reference field from the Label list.
- Type an entry in the Value field.
- Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to add another reference field to therule.
