Symptom
- The installation of IBM Director 3.1 with the Management Processor Assistant (MPA) Common Information Model (CIM) Provider for Linux cannot detect the ibmasm driver, even if the driver is present and installed.
- The installation script displays an error message indicating that the ibmasm driver is not detected and its installation needs to be verified.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM 
xSeries servers:
- An xSeries 380, type 8683, any model
- An xSeries 370, type 8681, any model
- An xSeries 360, type 8686, any model
- An xSeries 350, type 8682, any model
- An xSeries 340, type 8656, any model
- An xSeries 330, type 8674, any model
- An xSeries 330, type 8654, any model
- An xSeries 300, type 8672, any model
- An xSeries 250, type 8665, any model
- An xSeries 240, type 8664, any model
- An xSeries 230, type 8658, any model
- An xSeries 220, type 8646, any model
- An xSeries 220, type 8645, any model
The system may be any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:
- A Netfinity 8500R server, type 8681, any model
- A Netfinity 7600 server, type 8665, any model
- A Netfinity 7100 server, type 8666, any model
- A Netfinity 7000-M10 server, type 8680, any model
- A Netfinity 6000R server, type 8682, any model
- A Netfinity 5600 server, type 8664, any model
- A Netfinity 5500-M20 server, type 8662, any model
- A Netfinity 5500-M10 server, type 8661, any model
- A Netfinity 5500 server, type 8660, any model
- A Netfinity 5000 server, type 8659, any model
- A Netfinity 4500R server, type 8656, any model
The system is configured with one or more of the following:
- IBM Advanced System Management PCI Adapter, option part number 01K7209, replacement part number (FRU) 24P6538
- IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter, option part number 09N7585, replacement part number (FRU) 06P5073
The system is configured with IBM Director 3.1 with MPA Tools Extension utility.
The following network operating systems are affected:
- Red Hat, version 6.2
- Red Hat, version 7.1
- SUSE LINUX, version 7.1
Solution
The user should check that the machine does indeed have any of the following:
- IBM Advanced System Management PCI Adapter
- IBM Advanced System Management Processor (Onboard)
- IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter
If any of the above are present, the user should then verify the ibmasm driver's presence. At a Linux shell prompt, type the following: rpm -qa | grep ibmasm This command will check for the presence of the ibmasm driver.
NOTE: If the driver is present, the message can be ignored.
Additional information
The symptoms occur if the ibmasm driver is not present in the location that the MPA CIM Provider installation is expecting. Because this is simply an install messaging issue, there is no need for a fix. The MPA CIM provider should work as designed, regardless of the message, if the ibmasm driver is installed properly.
