License Key Template File is Missing or Empty

Troubleshooting


Problem

Attempts to start IBM Rational products that use FLEXlm licensing result in the error "The License Key Template File, file is missing or empty".

Symptom

The full error message is:

The License Key Template File, C:\Program Files\Rational\common\templates.ini file is missing or empty.
License keys cannot be generated.

Cause

This problem often occurs when the file templates.ini or the file templates.dll has been corrupted or removed by mistake from the system.

Resolving The Problem

This issue can be resolved by copying the file templates.ini or templates.dll from a known working system, or from the installation CD, to the following folder on the affected system:

C:\Program Files\Rational\Common\

If the issue still exists after creating a new copy of the templates.ini then check for the existence of the following directory:

C:\TEMP\RSLICTEMP\

  • If this directory exists copy the templates.ini file into that directory.
  • If that does not work, run a search on the machine for the templates.ini file.
    If you find a copy of the templates.ini file in the below directory, you need to cut and paste it into the C:\Temp directory.

    C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp\RSLICTEMP
