Launchpad does not work on MAC system if DISPLAY environment variable is not set

Troubleshooting

Problem

On OS X (Mountain Lion or newer), the DISPLAY environment variable is not set by default. Launchpad on IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software (RAD) install media depends on this value being set and therefore, by default (without the user setting DISPLAY explicitly) launchpad will not launch and there is no error shown. This problem also appears in the launchpad of other IBM products on Apple OS X.

Symptom

There is no error shown when launching the launchpad on MAC OS X (Mountain Lion or newer), if the DISPLAY environment variable is not set.
