"java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError" when starting custom component in Case Foundation Process Engine

Problem

When starting custom component from component manager, you see the following exception: java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: (com/filenet/pe/components/Custom_Operations) bad major version at offset=6

Symptom
