Troubleshooting
Problem
You install an IBM product using IBM Installation Manager version 1.4.1. You receive a java.io.IOException like "java.io.IOException: Failed to rename file". The installation fails.
Symptom
The installation fails and an error message similar to the following errors shows:
java.io.IOException: Failed to rename file 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager\adapters\native\IBM Installation Manager\com.ibm.sdp.eclipse.ide\backupDirs\16_' to 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager\adapters\native\IBM Installation Manager\com.ibm.sdp.eclipse.ide\backupDirs\16'.
or
java.io.IOException: Failed to rename file 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager\adapters\native\IBM Software Delivery
Platform\com.ibm.sdp.native\backupDirs\15_' to 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager\adapters\native\IBM Software Delivery Platform\com.ibm.sdp.native\backupDirs\15'.
Cause
This error can occur when there is a lock on a file from other software that is installed. This software might be file monitoring software like anti-virus software or file loss prevention software.
Resolving The Problem
To resolve this issue:
1. Update to Installation Manager version 1.4.2.
2. Open the config.ini file located in the Installation Manager installation location. By default, this location is:
Windows: C:\Program Files\IBM\Installation Manager\eclipse\configuration\config.ini
Linux and UNIX: /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse/config.ini
3. Remove the following two properties:
cic.retry.move
cic.skip.FileDescriptor.sync
Note: If the error is received during an Installation Manager update from 1.4.1 to 1.4.2, disable file monitoring software and retry the update.
