Java Virtual Machine installed automatically with ODBC driver

Question & Answer

Question

Why is a JVM installed with the NPS 4.0 ODBC Driver?

Answer

Commencing with NPS 4.0, the installation of the NPS ODBC Driver is using InstallAnywhere, which is a cross platform installer made by Macrovision.

InstallAnywhere is a Java-based installer.  During the configuration of the installer, we have a choice to use the existing JVM on the client system, or embed a known, compatible JVM within the installer.  We chose the latter because it provides a guaranteed compatible JVM.  During the installation of the ODBC driver, the InstallAnywhere installer will lay down a JVM in C:\Program Files\Netezza Performance Server (tm) ODBC Driver\jre.  This is used during install as well as uninstall.  It has no effects on the ODBC driver during its use.

You can remove the jre directory and its contents after installation if you have no desire to uninstall the ODBC driver.  However, if removed, the "add/remove programs" feature of the ODBC driver will be rendered inoperable unless an equivalent JVM is installed on the client system.
