Question & Answer
Question
Is it valid for one IBM Session Manager for z/OS (ISM) user to have multiple ACBs to the same application? This seems to leading to quite a few ISZ0285E messages:
ISZ0285E [userid termtype termid] Unable to allocate ACB for session IMS(session_number)
I went into Session Manager and entered QUERY APPLID IMS and found about 64 users active.
My RANGE statement is as follows:
RANGE IMS
FROM ISZ00005
TO 105
RRA YES
This indicates that I should have at least 100 ACBs available.
But, I found that some of the 64 userids have more than one ACB for this app. So, I think that would account for all 105 being in use. For example, this user has 4 ACBs:
ISZ0301I USER userid user_qualifier NODE nodename PROFILE profilename termtype termid
ISZ0320I (10) IMS ONLINE1 ACB ISZ00084 LGMD D4A32792 status ACT S( ),P( )
ISZ0320I (9) IMS ONLINE1 ACB ISZ00057 LGMD D4B32792 status ACT S( ),P( )
ISZ0320I (12) IMS ONLINE1 ACB ISZ00103 LGMD D4B32792 status ACT S( ),P( )
ISZ0320I (11) IMS ONLINE1 ACB ISZ00102 LGMD D4A32792 status ACT S( ),P( )
I just want to confirm that this is valid for one user to have multiple ACBs to the same app. If so, do I need to expand the ACB range to accommodate more sessions?
Answer
Yes, it is possible for a user to have multiple sessions to the same application. I believe IMS is similar to CICS in not allowing parallel 3270 sessions, so each signon to the same application needs a unique ACB from the RANGE.
See similar problem for CICS described in technote 1176375: Configuring multiple ISM sessions with the same CICS applid for a single user
