"Invalid <url-pattern> * in filter mapping" error when deploying Inspector

Troubleshooting


Problem

When deploying Inspector in Tomcat, the following error is observed in the Catalina log, keeping the webapp from starting up properly: INFO: Deploying web application archive inspector.war Sep 24, 2012 10:01:11 AM org.apache.catalina.startup.ContextConfig applicationWebConfig SEVERE: Parse error in application web.xml file at jndi:/localhost/inspector/WEB-INF/web.xml java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid * in filter mapping .... .... ....
