Intermittently (for example once a day) ALL users get "Connection with the server was lost" error simultaneously, caused by IIS application pool recycle

Problem

Intermittently, all users simultaneously receive an error

The problem is intermittent
  • It is relatively rare (by default it will never occur more than once a day, but normally it is much rarer than that)
  • It is not triggered by any particular user action. For example, it can occur when the user is completely idle (for example a user goes to lunch, comes back, and sees the error).

Symptom

Different symptoms appear inside different environments (for the same root cause). Therefore, the exact error that the end user sees may vary.
