Resolving The Problem
Intermittent delays might occur when using network shares on any Microsoft Windows server that has NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled over multiple LAN interfaces. This is a characteristic of Windows; however, such delays can be minimized or eliminated by disabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP on LAN interfaces that do not require this protocol.
These delays can be perceived as poor performance or poor responsiveness of the servers in question.
Use of network shares is obvious in some cases, however, not in others. The following example scenarios all involve network shares:
o | Directly accessing a network share by specifying a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path rather than a normal file path. UNC syntax is \\servername\volume\path\filename (servername may be a host name, a fully-qualified domain name, or a TCP/IP address). This syntax might be used in a 'Save As. . .' action, or while file browsing, for example. |
o | Using mapped drives. In 'My Computer', mapped drives are shown with network drive icons. |
o | UNC redirection of commonly used folders such as "My Documents" and "Application Data" in a server policy, or a Domain Group Policy. A server policy is usually defined on individual servers and can be viewed on the individual servers with a policy editor. A Domain Group Policy is usually defined on a Windows Domain Controller and can be viewed on the Windows Domain Controller with a policy editor. |
1. | Navigate to the Network Connections window. |
2. | Double-click IBM iSeries Virtual Ethernet Point-to-Point adapter, and click Properties. |
3. | Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Properties, click Advanced, and click the WINS tab. |
4. | Click Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Click on OK two times, and then click on Close. |
5. | Repeat Step 2 through Step 4 in this series of steps for each QLogic 1Gb PCI Ethernet Adapter. |
6. | If the problem persists, repeat Step 2 through Step 4 in this series of steps for other LAN interfaces (for example, any IBM iSeries Virtual Ethernet x adapters, where x is a number 0 through 9). Do not perform these steps for LAN interfaces that require NetBIOS over TCP/IP connectivity. If you perform these steps for an interface with unknown NetBIOS over TCP/IP requirements, be prepared to restore the original setting for the interface. |
