Problem

Users invoke the Internet Exporter Web browser to login to the Integrated Management Module (IMM) Web user interface: Web -> Server Management -> Server firmware -> Update firmware After uploading a firmware image for IMM firmware, the user idles untilthe Web session times out and is removed from AppWeb. When the user tries to login again to the Web and attempts to update firmware again, the IMM Web user interface displays an error message that indicates: another firmware update is already in progress

Symptom

Users invoke the Internet Exporter Web browser to login to the Integrated Management Module (IMM) Web user interface:

  Web -> Server Management -> Server firmware -> Update firmware

After uploading a firmware image for IMM firmware, the user idles until the Web session times out and is removed from AppWeb. When the user tries to login again to the Web and attempts to update firmware again, the IMM Web user interface displays an error message that indicates:

  another firmware update is already in progress

Affected configurations

The system can be any of the following IBM servers:

This tip is not software specific.

This tip is not option specific.

The following system firmware level is affected:

Integrated Management Module (IMM) 48H

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release of firmware.

For all platforms except the IBM System x NeXtScale nx360 M4, the target date for this release is fourth quarter 2013.

The file is or will be available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

Choose one of these two workarounds:

  1. When the Web session is timed out, wait for five minutes, then it is OK to update firmware again.
  2. Use the Service Processor (SP) Command Line Interface (CLI) command 'spreset' to resolve this issue.
    1. Use Telnet to login to the IMM Command Line Interface (CLI).
    2. Issue the 'spreset' command, which resets IMM directly.

Additional Information

This issue occurs because IMM does not revoke the firmware update request after the Web session times out.
