1.0 What you will need
You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:
- A registered copy of VMware vSphere 5.5
- Supported hard disk drives. See http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the server.

3.0 Preparing the hardware
To prepare the hardware, update system firmware, and configure arrays, see the IBM BladeCenter HS22 (7870) Installation Guide and User's Guide at the IBM Support Portal.
4.0 Getting Started with VMware vSphere 5.5
To install VMware vSphere 5.5, complete the following steps:
- VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5.5 with IBM Custom image** is
recommended for installation, you can download from following site:
- IBM x86 solutions for VMware vSphere Hypervisor: http://www.ibm.com/systems/x/os/vmware/esxi/.
- or
- Standard VMware ESXi 5.5 image from VMware.
- Follow the detailed instructions in vSphere Installation and Setup Guideto configure VMware ESXi 5.5.

1) It is tested across IBM?s server and adapter portfolio with the same ServerProven® support guarantee as VMware?s base release.
2) The image enables support of IBM?s tools, including ToolCenter that give the customer the ability to flash System x, BladeCenter, and PureFlex firmware such as: uEFI; IMM; pDSA; FPGA; and vendor firmware from Broadcom; Brocade; Emulex; LSI; and Qlogic.
3) The image includes the latest drivers that align with VMware?s release schedule. These updated drivers support IBM?s portfolio to include such adapters as the Emulex 10GbE Virtual Fabric Adapter I and II for IBM System x, QLogic 10Gb CNA for IBM System x, and Brocade 8Gb FC Dual-port HBA for IBM System x.
4) The image includes vendor CIM providers allowing for additional hardware alerts within vCenter. The providers also provide the customers the ability to use specific vendor tools for managing their environment.
