How To
Summary
NVMe drives are supported as a boot device for VIOS, however, while installing the VIOS OS on new NVMe device, the installation wizard might not recognize any disks to install on despite being listed when scanning the I/O devices information in SMS.
Steps
In NVMe technology, a namespace is a collection of Logical Block Addresses (LBA) that are accessible to the host software, each namespace appears as a discrete storage device to the host (as hdisk device) and can be identified in the VIOS installation wizard.
> To check if the NVMe has a namespace configured, assign the NVMe adapters to the VIOS partition from the HMC :

- From the Welcome to AIX screen, type 1 to select the terminal that you are using as the system console.
- From the Diagnostics Operating Instructions menu, press Enter to continue.
- From the Function Selection menu, type 3 to select Task Selection.
- From the Define Terminal menu, enter a terminal type.
Note: If you are using a remote terminal connection such as PuTTY, use either the VT320 or VT340 terminal emulation, if using a local console from HMC use VT100.
- From the Task Selection List, select the NVMe Manager option.
- From the NVMe Manager screen, select the Namespace Management and Attachment option.
- From the Namespace Management and Attachment screen, select the Create a Namespace option.
- From the Namespace Create Supported Controllers window, select the device for which you want to create a namespace.
Note: If the device for which you want to create a namespace is not displayed, the maximum number of namespaces might already be created and you cannot create any more namespaces.
- From the Create a Namespace screen, enter the desired namespace size. If you do not know what to enter for the LBA Format and Attach after Create fields, use the default values.
- From the COMMAND STATUS screen, press F3 (function key 3) to return to the Namespace Management and Attachment screen.
- To create more namespaces, repeat the steps.
