Preventive Service Planning
Abstract
IBM Installation Manager is required to apply an interim fix or fix pack on WebSphere Application Server ND. It is not installed as part of the IBM Information Server suite You need to install Installation Manager prior to installing the update to WebSphere.
Content
The InfoSphere Information Server installation does not install IBM Installation Manager. It uses a copy of the Installation Manager code on the suite media to install WebSphere via the command line support. Since the Installation Manager code on the suite media is not a true installation, neither Installation Manager nor WebSphere can be updated using the standard Installation Manager processes.
If you do not already have Installation Manager installed on your system, you need to install it to do the update. You should download the recommended version for the interim fix or fix pack which you need to install on WebSphere. If you cannot download the WebSphere recommended Installation Manager, you can install Installation Manager using the version on our installation media in <download location>/is-suite/payloads/Shared/WAS/payload/WAS/agentInstaller.
Note: The Installation Manager on our installation media may not be suitable for the patches you are trying to install. The version of the Installation Manager on the InfoSphere Information Server media varies based on the version of InfoSphere Information Server you installed and may require updates for the WebSphere patch you need to install. For example, the WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5 Fix Pack 8 SDK Java Technology Edition V7.0 patch (7.0.9.10_0001-WS-IBMWASJAVA-[platform].zip) requires a later version than the Installation Manager version shipped with InfoSphere Information Server. It is recommended that you obtain the most recent Installation Manager available for your platform.
See http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24040291 for information on how to download, install, or update IBM Installation Manager. If you install Installation Manager, you must install version 1.5 or later for InfoSphere Information Server 9.1.2 and version 1.7 or later for InfoSphere Information Server version 11.
In order for the new installation of Installation Manager to update the WebSphere installed by InfoSphere Information Server, it needs to find the agent data created during the Information Server installation. Do not change the default location of the agent data when you install Installation Manager. If IBM Installation Manager was not installed on the system prior to installing Information Server, the Information Server installation of WebSphere will result in the creation of the Installation Manager agent data in the default location (see http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSDV2W_1.8.0/com.ibm.silentinstall12.doc/topics/r_app_data_loc.html). After installing Installation Manager, you can confirm it can update WebSphere by running the following command using the an ID with root or Administrator authority:
# <installation manager location path>/InstallationManager/eclipse/tools/imcl listInstallationDirectories
or
"C:\<installation manager location path\Installation Manager\eclipse\tools\imcl.exe" listInstallationDirectories
The command should list the installation directory for the version of WebSphere that was installed by IBM Information Server.
After Installation Manager is installed, you can follow the normal WebSphere instructions for updates: Installing and uninstalling interim fixes and fix packs on distributed operating systems ( http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSAW57_8.5.5/com.ibm.websphere.installation.nd.doc/ae/tins_install_fixes_dist.html?cp=SSAW57_8.5.5%2F1-5-0-5-0-5).
