Follow the instructions in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the Tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu.

1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

  • For installation - A licensed copy of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition.
  • For installation – Depending on System type, an external DVD reader might be required.
  • Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www.ibm.com/support/ for the list of supported options and part numbers for the computer.

3.0 Installation instructions for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition


3.1 Instructions for manual software installation

To install Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition, complete the following steps:

  1. Connect the System as required.
  2. Depending on the type of system used, an external DVD might need to be attached.
  3. Turn on the system and insert the Windows Server 2008 x64 Setup DVD into the DVD drive. When you are prompted with the message Press any key to boot from CD or DVD press any key. Setup copies the files from the setup CD.
  4. Windows is loading files… (This process takes several minutes.)
  5. Windows Server 2008  Screen
    1. Language to install: English
    2. Time and currency format:  English (United States)
    3. Keyboard or input method:  US
  6. Press Next.
  7. Click on “Install Now”.
  8. Type your product key.
    1. Check Automatically activate Windows when I’m online
    2. Click  Next.
    3. (Scroll the down the cricket to read the agreement)
    4. Check the “I accept the license terms”
    5. Click Next.
  9. Click on “Custom (advanced)”
  10. When Windows Server Setup displays all the hard disk storage that is available on the computer, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows Server:
  1. Allow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server and press Next.
  2. Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server, click on “Drive options (advanced)”and press New. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the nonpartitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB) and press Apply and then press Next
  1. Installing Windows
    1. Copying Windows Files
    2. Expanding files
    3. Installing features
    4. Installing updates
    5. Completing installation
  2. System installation will proceed with no user intervertion until final system restart.

When Windows Server 2008  Setup has completed installation, the computer automatically restarts.

  1. After Windows Server 2008  starts, you will be prompted to change the administrator password before being able to log on.
  2. Once you are logged on as Administrator, you will see the preliminary configuration screen, where naming and basic network setup can be done.
  3. Once that is complete you can use the Microsoft Server 2008  Roles and Features functions to setup you server to your specific needs.

4.0 Post-installation instructions: Installing and updating device drivers

Use the procedures in the following sections to install the device drivers and resolve any Unknown device. To do this, you need to open Device Manager by complete the following steps:

  1. Select Start (Windows button)
  2. Right-click Computer.
  3. Select Manage, click Continue and select Device Manager in the upper left corner of the page.
  4. Use the following procedures to clear any unknown device errors as displayed.  

4.1 Installing the Intel Chipset driver

To install the Intel chipset drivers for the system board  complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers
  2.  Follow the menus for x3100 M3 to download the Intel™ Chipset Software Installation Utility and use one of the following procedures:
    • Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
    • Transfer the file to a local drive, and double-click the executable (exe) file to run it.
  3. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  4. In the License Agreement window, click Yes to agree to the License Agreement.
  5. At the Readme information, click Next.
  6. After the device drivers are installed, click Finish.
  7. Best practice is to reboot the system after a chipset installation.

4.2 Installing the Intel Gigabit Ethernet device driver

To install the Intel Ethernet device driver, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers
  2. Follow the menus for x3100 M3 for the instructions to download the Intel Ethernet device driver. Copy the file (exe) to a USB key or other portable storage device. This download takes a few minutes. 
  3. Install the USB key into one of the x3100 M3 USB ports and Double-click the device driver package. An executable (.exe) file will open an extraction program. 
  4. In the Querying System Package information window, select "Perform Update" and click Next. 
  5. In the Package and System Match window, click Update to proceed. 
  6. When the message The driver update has been completed successfully is displayed, click EXIT.

To configure the network, click in sequential order: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections, and then choose New Connection Wizard to set up the network connection. To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties in the main window. To join a domain, click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, the Computer Name tab, and click Change.

4.3 Installing ATI video device driver

Follow the steps below to reference installation instructions for drivers on the  specific video card installed.

  1. Go to Software and device drivers
  2. Follow the menus for the 4253 to download the specific video device driver for the video adaptor installed.
  3. Refer to the readme file accompanying the device driver for specific installation instructions..
