Steps

Prerequisites

  • Windows NT 4.0 WorkStation
  • Windows NT 4.0 CD

System Preparation

Configure your system to boot from the CD-ROM:

  1. Restart system, press F1 when prompted
  2. Select the Start options
  3. Select Start sequence
  4. Set the first boot device to CD-ROM, the second boot device to Hard Disk Drive, the third boot device to Disabled, and the fourth boot device to Disabled
  5. Escape to the main menu, save your settings and exit. The system will now boot from the CD-ROM

Installation

  1. Start the system with the Windows NT 4.0 CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. The first window is the "Welcome to Windows NT Setup." Press Enter.
  3. The next screen will ask if you want to let setup AUTODETECT MASS STORAGE DEVICES. Press Enter to start the detection process.
  4. In the "Detection Process Complete" window press Enter to continue.
  5. Setup will show a message that your system has over 1024 cylinders, press Enter.
  6. Page down to read the End User License Agreement. If you accept the Terms and Conditions of the License Agreement, press F8 on the last screen to continue the installation process.
  7. Setup will show a description of your system. If the description matches your system, Press Enter.
  8. Setup will prompt you to create the boot partition. Press C to create the partition. The partition should not be smaller than 512 MB, but not larger than 4096 MB.
  9. Select the new partition to install Windows NT.
  10. Setup will prompt you for the format choice. FAT is suggested for the boot partition.
  11. Setup will then prompt you for the location to install. Use the default path.
  12. Setup will inspect the hard diskdrive.
  13. Setup will then prompt you for the SCSI Driver diskette (if needed) . Put the diskette into the floppy disk drive, and press Enter. This concludes the first part of setup.

Graphical Portion

  1. The first window is "Windows NT Setup" , click Next.
  2. Choose the type of setup you would like. Typical is recommended, click Next
  3. Enter your Name and Organization name, click Next
  4. Enter the Product ID (Found on the front of the Windows NT Book), click Next.
  5. Enter the desired computer name, click Next.
  6. Enter the Administrator's password two times, click Next. (Do not forget this password, as you will not be able to log on to your system with out it.)
  7. Setup will then prompt you to create an emergency repair disk. Select Yes, create an emergency repair disk, then click Next.
  8. Select Install the most common components, click Next.
  9. Click Next to start "Installing Windows NT Networking".
  10. Contact your network administrator (if needed) at this point for the configuration of your network settings. For this installation we will skip installing the network portion by selecting "Do not connect this computer to a network at this time." Click Next.
  11. Select the time zone you are in, click Close.
  12. A "Detected Display" window will appear. Click OK on the message stating it has found a vga compatible display adapter.
  13. Click OK to continue. Setup will copy files at this point.
  14. Setup will ask for a diskette for the Emergency Repair Disk, insert in the diskette drive, and press OK.
  15. When the diskette is finished, a message will come up to reboot the system. Remove all media from the drives before rebooting.
  16. To complete the install of Windows NT 4.0 on your system you will need to download a service pack. You must install Service Pack 4 or later. You can download the service packs from Microsoft.
