Use these instructions to install Windows 2000 on a hard drive.

1.0 What you will need
Follow the Network Operating System (NOS) instructions provided in this document sequentially unless you are instructed differently. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document the term 'select' is used to mean, use the arrow keys to highlight a selection on a menu.

A supported hard drive. Refer to http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for a list of supported options and part numbers for your server.

Check the BIOS version currently installed on your system. Version 1.14 or higher is required. Click here to download the latest BIOS update .

Check the BIOS/Firmware version currently installed onboard IBM ServeRAID Controller. Click here to download the latest IBM ServeRAID Controller update .

Obtain the Service Processor (Advanced System Management device driver) version 1.10 or later. Click here to download the latest Advanced System Management device driver .

4.0 Installation instructions
  1. Start up the system using the Windows 2000 Setup CD.
  2. The Windows 2000 Server Setup Screen will display after a few moments. Follow the on-screen instructions, and files will be copied to the hard drive.
  3. When Windows 2000 Setup Screen comes up, user will be prompted with the Setup Notification screen. Press Enter to confirm.
  4. The user will be prompted with the Welcome to Setup screen. Press Enter to confirm.
  5. Page down to read the License Agreement. If you agree to the License Agreement, press F8 to continue with the installation process.
  6. Choose or create a partition on which to install Windows 2000. C: is suggested. Press Enter to continue.
  7. Choose NTFS or FAT file system, and press Enter to continue.
  8. Windows NT will examine your hard drive, copy files to the drive, and reboot.
  9. The system will then boot to the graphical portion of setup (Windows 2000 Setup Wizard), displaying the Welcome Screen, after Windows 2000 is fully loaded. Select Next to continue.
  10. Windows 2000 installs and configures devices.
  11. The Regional Settings screen will be displayed. Make changes only if you do not want US settings.
  12. Select Next to continue.
  13. Provide your Name and Organization on the Personalize Your Software screen. Select Next to continue.
  14. Enter Product Key number. Select Next to continue.
  15. Choose the appropriate options on the Licensing Mode screen. Select Next to continue.
  16. Set the System Name and the Administrative Password on the Computer Name and Administrator Password screen. Select Next to continue.
  17. Choose the components you would like installed on the Windows 2000 Components screen. Select Next to continue.
  18. Set the Time, Date, and Time Zone on the Date and Time Settings screen. Select Next to continue.
  19. Select Next to install Windows NT Networking on the Network Settings screen.
  20. Choose Typical or Custom Settings . Select Next to continue.
  21. Set up network components as needed by your network. Windows 2000 should detect your NIC Adapter(s) automatically.
  22. Windows 2000 will install components and any additional support required on the Installing Components screen. Select Next to continue.
  23. Windows 2000 will Install start menu items, Register components, Save settings, Remove any temporary files used on the Perform Final Tasks screen.
  24. Select Finish to complete the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard.
  25. The system will reboot and load Windows 2000.
  26. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to logon.
  27. When the desktop is displayed, you may see the Windows 2000 Configure Your Server wizard, which will further help you setup your server. This wizard will help configure many of the components you chose to install.
  28. Open Device Manager. Observe the two Unknown Devices. One of the Unknown devices is Service Processor.
  29. Install the Service Processor Driver 1.10 diskette to Floppy Drive for one of the unknown device.

5.0 Upgrade Instructions
Preparing your system for an upgrade
Prior to upgrade:
  • Verify that all applications are compatible for Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Advance server. For more information refer to Readme.doc (in the root directory of the Windows 2000 Advanced Server CD-ROM).
  • Determine if your IBM Netfinity Server meets all the minimum hardware requirements for running Windows 2000 Server or Advance Server.
  • Back-up all data files and information on the computer before upgrading.
  • Look for information regarding applications that need to be disabled or removed before running Setup. Click here to view the most recent information on compatible applications .

Also verify the compatibility of your OEM device drivers and obtain Windows 2000 drivers from the vendor(s) that provided the device.

Lists below are upgrade compatibility from Windows NT to Windows 2000 Server or Advance Server.
Current Operating System Compatible Upgrade Operating System
Windows NT 4.0 Server Windows 2000 Server
Windows NT Enterprise Edition Windows 2000 Advance Server

If you have Windows NT 4.0 Server Enterprise Edition, you can upgrade to Windows 2000 Advance Server, but not Windows 2000 Server.

To start an upgrade from the CD-ROM
  1. Apply Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack to Service Pack 6 or greater.
  2. Insert Windows 2000 CD in the CD-ROM drive, and wait for Setup to display a dialog box.
  3. At the prompt with a message to upgrade to Windows 2000. Click Yes .
  4. Verify that the Upgrade option is selected. Select Next .
  5. Page down to read the License Agreement. If you agree to the License Agreement, press F8 to continue with the installation process.
  6. Enter Product Key number. Select Next to continue.
  7. The Windows 2000 Server Setup Screen will display after a few moments. Follow the on-screen instructions, and files will be copied to the hard drive.
  8. Windows NT will examine your hard drive, copy files to the drive, and reboot without user intervention.
  9. When the system finishes the boot up it will begin the graphical portion of setup (Windows 2000 Setup Wizard), displaying the Welcome Screen, after Windows 2000 is fully loaded.
  10. Windows 2000 installs and configures devices.
  11. Windows 2000 will then Install start menu items, Register components, Save settings, Remove any temporary files used on the Perform Final Tasks screen.
  12. Select Finish to complete the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard.
  13. The system will reboot and load Windows 2000.
  14. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to logon.
  15. When the desktop is displayed, you may see the Windows 2000 Configure Your Server wizard, which will further help you setup your server services. This wizard will help configure many of the components you chose to install.

6.0 Clustering
