Installing a Hosted Partition from an Image Catalog

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document explains how to install a hosted partition from an image catalog.

Resolving The Problem

1.

Create an image catalog.

CRTIMGCLG IMGCLG(INSTALL) DIR('/home/install')
2. Add media images to the catalog.

Add each of the installation DVD/CDs to the image catalog.

ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(INSTALL) FROMDEV(OPT01) TOFILE(ibase)
3. Create a dependent image catalog for each client partition.

CRTIMGCLG IMGCLG(CP7) DIR(*refimgclg) REFIMGCLG(INSTALL)

Where CP7 can be any name.
Where INSTALL needs to be the image catalog where the media is located.
4. Create and vary on a virtual optical device (632B) for each dependent image catalog.

Create virtual optical device (632B).
CRTDEVOPT DEVD(OPTVRTCP7) RSRCNAME(*VRT)

Vary on virtual optical device (632B).
VRYCFG CFGOBJ(OPTVRTCP7) CFGTYPE(*DEV) STATUS(*ON)
5. Mount the media image.

The mounted virtual image is the available virtual image that can be seen by using the Work with Catalog Entries (WRKIMGCLGE) or Work with Optical Volumes (WRKOPTVOL) command. Only one virtual image can be mounted at a time.

This is a screen shot of the Work with Image Catalog Entries screen and using option 6 to Mount the image.
6. Load the image catalog.

Load image catalog to 63BB virtual optical device. This must be done after every IPL.
LODIMGCLG IMGCLG(CP7) DEV(OPTVRTCP7)

This is a screen shot of the Load or Unload Image Catalogs screen.
7. Vary off / Vary on the NWSD (Network Server Description).

Optical devices are not added dynamically to the NWSD. You must vary it off and then back on.

Note: After an IPL, the image catalog has to be loaded again.
8. In the partition profile of the client partition, tag the SCSI adapter as the Alternate restart device.

The DM IPL will boot from the alternate restart device. Because you want to install from the virtual optical on the host, you want to tag the SCSI adapter as the alternate restart device.

9. Follow the installation guide to install LIC and OS. After the LIC is installed and prior to installing OS, you will change the CD in the virtual media library. You need to unmount the i_base CD and then mount the Boss 1 image.
