8.0
You will need to obtain the following items:
- A licensed copy of Caldera Open UNIX version 8.0
- Supported hard disk drives (View a list of the supported options and part numbers for your server.)
- A supported adapter (View a list of the supported options and part numbers for your server.)
- If you have
installed an IBM ServeRAID adapter, you will need the following CD
or diskettes:
- An IBM ServeRAID Support CD version 4.80 or later
- An IBM ServeRAID device drivers for Open UNIX operating systems diskette version 4.80 or later
- One blank diskette to create an Emergency Repair diskette (Label it Emergency Repair Diskette.)
2.0 Where to download device drivers and files
You may download the device drivers and files from the following Web sites:
- IBM U.S. Web site: http://www.ibm.com/systems/support
- Caldera FTP site: ftp://ftp.caldera.com
- Caldera Web site: http://www.caldera.com
If you have prior experience with small computer system interface (SCSI), hardware, and the installation process, continue with 3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users. If not, continue with 4.0 Detailed installation instructions.
3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users
Complete the following less-detailed steps if you have experience in installing programs:
NOTES:
- Before you install Caldera Open UNIX version 8.0 on a SCSI controller, disable the IDE controller from BIOS or disconnect the IDE cable from the IDE hard disk. This step might cause system startup failure from the SCSI controller after the installation process.
- Caldera Open Unix version 8.0 cannot be installed when the startup (boot) device (for example, a ServeRAID card) is located inside of an RXE100 box. After Caldera Open Unix version 8.0 is installed on an xSeries 360, the startup device can be relocated into the RXE100 box and operate with full functionality.
- Start the server and insert the Caldera Open UNIX version 8.0 installation CD 1 into the CD-ROM drive.
- Follow the
instructions that will guide you through the installation process.
Complete the following (as applicable):
- If you use the IBM ServeRAID adapter, from the window for installing HBA diskettes, insert the IBM ServeRAID device drivers for Caldera Open UNIX version 8.0 diskette (IPS HBA diskette) and select Install HBA Diskette.
- If you use the integrated SCSI controller or adapter, select Proceed with installation and press F10.
- If you use the IDE controller or HDD without any SCSI controller, select Proceed with installation and press F10.
- At the Network Configuration window, select Defer Network Configuration.
- At the Selecting The Mouse window, select PS/2-compatible Mouse.
4.0 Detailed installation instructions
Complete the following sections which contain detailed installation instructions for the Caldera Open UNIX version 8.0.
NOTE: You may install and configure the network adapter devices during or after the installation process.
4.1 Setting up the hardware for Caldera Open UNIX version 8.0 installation
- Unplug the
server and remove the cover. If problems occur when you attempt to
install multiple adapters or devices in the initial installation,
install all microprocessors that you plan to use and remove all
adapters and devices that are not required to install the base
operating system.
For example, if you install multiple network adapters, install only one now. If you use a tape drive or external SCSI devices, disconnect them temporarily. After the operating system starts without errors, reinstall the removed adapters and devices one at a time. This procedure simplifies the installation process.
NOTE: If you plan to use an external direct access storage device (DASD) enclosure, the following instructions do not apply. Refer to the documentation provided with the external enclosure for the correct setup; then continue with 4.2 Setting up the System Service Package.
- Install the hard disk drives in the drive bays.
- Install the cover.
- Plug in the server.
4.2 Setting up the System Service Package
The System Service Package image is a self-extracting, executable file (in DOS or OS/2) that you use to create flash diskettes. Complete the following steps to install the System Service Package:
- Download the
IBM xSeries 360 System Service Package. The system Service Package
contain the latest versions of the following images:
- BIOS code
- Diagnostics code
- System Management Processor firmware files

the System Service Package, complete the following steps:
- From the IBM Support Web site, click Downloadable files in the left pane of the window.
- From the Select Your Product menu, select the product family.
- From the Downloadable Files by Category menu, select System Service Package. A link to the package for the selected server will appear.
NOTE: There is a different link for each server.
- To build the diskette images; double-click to start the executable (.exe) file (in DOS or OS/2). In the last window of the License Agreement, press the Y key. Properly label the diskettes using the part numbers to associate the correct names for the flash diskettes.
- Start the server.
- When the IBM logo appears, press F1 to start the Configuration/Setup utility.
- Verify that your BIOS revision level is at the latest level of BIOS code.
NOTE: If you need to update the BIOS code, you must also update the diagnostics code, system management processor firmware, and system management device driver code.
- To update
the BIOS code on the IBM xSeries 360 server, complete the following
steps:
- Restart the server with the BIOS code diskette in the diskette drive.
- Select Update POST/BIOS.
- Press the Y key when the message "Would you like to move the current code to the backup location within the flash ROM?" appears.
- Press the Y key when the message "Would you like to save the current flash code to disk?" appears.

- Select Exit Utility and then click Yes, exit utility.
- Remove the diskette, and press Enter to restart the server.
- Install the System Management device driver (if applicable), by following the installation instructions included in the README.txt file for your NOS. These instructions are NOS specific.
NOTE: When all of the updates are complete, press F1 to start the Configuration/Setup Utility as the system restarts (when the IBM logo appears). You might receive an "162 Configuration has changed" error. Ignore this message.
- From the Configuration/Setup Utility menu, select Load Default Settings and press Enter.
- From the menu bar, click Start Options and press Enter.
- From the Start Options menu, select Startup Sequence, and press Enter.
- From the Startup Sequence menu, select CD ROM at the First Boot Device prompt and Diskette Drive 0 at the Second Boot Device prompt. Select Hard Disk 0 at the Third Boot Device prompt and Disabled at the Fourth Boot Device prompt.
