Why does any attempt to start the IBM Installation Manager GUI or run the imcl command fail with the following error:

Error restoring Installation Manager state.

XML document structures must start and end within the same entity.

Cause

This error can be due to a corrupt xml file in the Installation Manager Agent Data location.
Check the following files for possible corruption and/or structural problems.

installed.xml

installRegistry.xml

Answer

If corruption is found in one or both of the above files, restore the file(s) from a good backup if available.
If there is no backup available and if the corruption cannot easily be identified and fixed, re-installation of the product may be necessary.
