Installation Manager displays a warning when specifying an existing Software Development Platform shared directory

Troubleshooting

Problem

IBM Installation Manager's wizard, at the time of the base installation of an Software Development Platform product, asks the user to specify the absolute path of the Software Development Platform shared directory. If the path of such directory is the existing path of another Software Development Platform product previously installed, then a warning message is shown. There is no clear explaination of that warning on the Installation Manager Infocenter.

Symptom

The warning message is:

The specified C:\Program Files\IBM\SDP70Shared location contains files that might be managed by another Installation Manager.  Select an empty location to avoid corrupting existing files.

It appears as in the following screenshot:

Cause

This problem has been recognized as a documentation defect and logged under APAR PK95174.

Resolving The Problem

Often, you may simply be recording the response file using the -skipInstall feature of Installation Manager. In that case, the Software Development Platform shared directory you will want to use will be in fact that exact one, despite the warning message.

The warning is there to prevent unsafe usage of the Software Development Platform common plug-in directory. It refers to the possibility of having multiple Installation Manager instances on the same workstation. Using the Software Development Platform shared directory of another Installation Manager could lead to unpredictable side effects.
