Installation Manager in console code does not display characters correctly

Troubleshooting

Problem

When using IBM Installation Manager in console mode, some characters show as question marks instead of the actual character.

Symptom

Special characters show as the "?" character in console mode. The special characters include the copyright symbol and the trademark symbol.

Cause

The character encoding and font on the system are not set to correctly show the special characters in console mode.

Resolving The Problem

To work around this issue, change the command line properties.

On the command line for Windows:
1. In the command prompt, enter the command: chcp 1252
2. Right click on the title bar of the command line window and select properties.
3. On the font tab, select the Lucida Console font.

Using Windows PuTTY for Linux and other operating systems:
1. Configure PuTTY in the following ways:

    a. Window > Appearance > Change Font > Lucida Console (12 pt)
    b. Window > Translation > Character set translation... > UTF-8
