Initial load and delta load performance in ETL

Question & Answer

Question

What is the difference in ETL performance between delta load and initial load?

Answer

The difference of performance between ETL delta load and initial load depends on capability of the data service. If the data service has the capability to return the data modified only after a specified date and time, the ETL process will load only the data modified after the last successful load. This is called delta load. The time taken for delta load is less than that for initial load because usually the volume of data modified between two ETL loads is much smaller than volume of data loaded initially in the first ETL load.

The data service for Rational Insight ClearQuest, RequisitePro, and ClearCase (for file versions only) is capable of querying data modified after a specified date and time. This means that the time taken for delta loading in ETL for these resources is less than the time taken for initial loading.
