64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows may become unstable and display a blue screen describing a problem with "aacmgt.sys" with ServeRAID Manager (SRM) version 8.30 installed.

64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows may become unstable and display a blue screen describing a problem with "aacmgt.sys" with ServeRAID Manager (SRM) version 8.30 installed.

Affected configurations

This tip is not hardware specific.

The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:

  • ServeRAID-4H Ultra160 SCSI Controller, Option part number 37L6889, replacement part number (FRU) 37L6892
  • ServeRAID-4L Ultra160 SCSI Controller, Option part number 37L6091, replacement part number (FRU) 09N9540
  • ServeRAID-4Lx Ultra160 SCSI Controller, Option part number 06P5740, replacement part number (FRU) 06P5741

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server 64 Bit Limited Edition, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, EE x64, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, x64 Edition, any service pack
  • ServeRAID Application CD Version 8.25, Version 8.30

Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Solution

This behavior was corrected in the SRM Application starting with version 8.40 and higher.

The file is available from the Servers - ServeRAID Software Matrix at the following URL:

Workaround

Install one of the above versions of SRM under any Microsoft Windows 64-bit edition using the normal process (see the User Reference Guide SRAID.PDF for specific information). After the installation completes, Copy the file "aacmgt.sys" from:

C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\ServeRAID Manager\

to

C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\

If upgrading to versions 8.25 or 8.30 from a previous version, the "aacmgt.sys" file may already exist in the C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\ folder. If prompted, overwrite the previous version of "aacmgt.sys".

After the copy completes, restart the system.

Additional information

Due to a defect in the installer for the 64-bit Windows environment, the file "aacmgt.sys" is copied into the incorrect folder. This results in an improper install of the affected versions of the SRM application.

Stability problems may occur when upgrading to either 8.25 or 8.30 from a previous version of SRM, because the previous version of "aacmgt.sys" will be in the correct location. These versions of SRM are not fully compatible with previous versions of the driver. As a result, Windows may blue screen asserting a problem with the "aacmgt.sys" driver.

SRM version 9.0 currently available on the IBM ServeRAID software matrix does not install the "aacmgt.sys" filter driver. The functions of this filter driver have been embedded into the Windows device driver build 12913 (and higher) so the "aacmgt.sys" driver is not necessary after the system is upgraded. However, if an older version of the Windows device driver is being used, like build 11829 or lower, and a previous version of SRM is upgraded to version 9.0, the new version will use the existing aacmgt.sys filter driver to interface with the Windows device driver to support the management functions.
