IMM, IMM2, or RSA Remote Control May Require Java Security Edit to Start for IBM System x

Troubleshooting


Problem

Beginning with Oracle Java version 7 update 51 (build 1.7.0_51-b13), Remote Supervisory Adapter (RSA), Integrated Management Module (IMM), or IMM2 Remote Control of a server might not start. There can be Oracle Java security warnings similar to the following:
  • "... missing required Permissions manifest attribute in main jar..."
  • "This application will be blocked in a future Java security update because the JAR file manifest does not contain the Permissions attribute. Please contact the Publisher for more information."
You many also select IMM Remote Control with "Java" selected and no new window appears.

Cause

In Oracle Java Version 7 Update 51, security enhancements were made that affected the Remote Control function of IBM RSA and IMM.

Environment

Affected systems can be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3850 M2, type 7141, any model
  • System x3850 M2, type 7144, any model
  • System x3850 M2, type 7233, any model
  • System x3850 M2, type 7234, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7143, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7145, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7146, any model
  • System x3850 X5, type 7191, any model
  • System x3850 X6, type 3837 (4-socket), any model
  • System x3850 X6, type 3839 (4-socket), any model, any 3850 x6
  • System x3950 M2, type 7141, any model
  • System x3950 M2, type 7144, any model
  • System x3950 M2, type 7233, any model
  • System x3950 M2, type 7234, any model
  • System x3950 X5, type 7143, any model
  • System x3950 X5, type 7145, any model
  • System x3950 X6, type 3837 (8-socket), any model, any 3839 x6
  • System x3950 X6, type 3839 (8-socket), any model

Resolving The Problem

To resolve the error, perform these steps:
  1. Open the "Configure Java" utility, usually located in: 
    Windows 32-bit OS: c:\Program Files\Java\jre{N}\bin\javacpl.exe
Windows 64-bit OS: c:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre{N}\bin\javacpl.exe
    Where {N} represents your installed java version.
  2. Click the "Security" tab.
  3. Click the "Edit Site List..." button to add to the Exception Site List.
  4. Add the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the RSA, IMM, or IMM2 to the Exception Site List: 
    https://{ip}:443
    Note on Microsoft Windows 10 you might need to right click on the downloaded IMM file, select settings, and then select unblock.
  5. Click "OK" until the Oracle Java Control Panel closes.
