Question & Answer

Question

Can we IPL SA ICKSDF from our TS7720 virtual tape engine? Reading the ICKDSF Users Guide, it says ICKDSF can be IPLd from a 3494 tape library but does not say it can be IPL'd from a virtual tape.

Answer

You can use stand-alone ICKDSF and DFSMSdss stand-alone RESTORE with any IBM virtual tape server, along with IBM 3494 and TS3500 family of automated tape libraries.

The ICKDSF manual: Device Support Facilities (ICKDSF) User's Guide and Reference R17 (GC35-0033-36) is updated to include:

In chapter 7, we have a section called 'IPLing the Stand-Alone from a tape library' in this section, the following is added:

Stand-Alone ICKDSF can also be IPLed from a 3584 (TS3500) Tape Library and the Virtual Tape Server. It can also be IPLed from virtual tape
Volumes in a TS7700 Virtualization Engine.

For details review the following manuals on how to set up and use a Stand-Alone device:

  • 3494 Tape Library Dataserver Intro and Plan Guide, GA32-0279

The steps outline here pertain to D/T3494, TS3500, TS3584, and all IBM Virtual Tape Servers:
  • ICKDSF Stand-Alone must be at Release 16 or higher.
  • Microcode levels must be at the following levels or higher:
    • Library Manager microcode level - 50C.00
    • D/T3490 microcode level - C05568R
  • Supported only when running in XA or ESA mode.
  • Drives to be used for Stand-Alone MUST be offline to other systems.
  • When using the D/T3494 tape library for the IPL tape, the IPL tape must be mounted and ready before performing the IPL.
  • Mounting of the IPL tape can be done by way of either:
    • DeMOUNTING: Unload and demount the IPL tape after Stand-Alone completion by cancelling the mount from input station (cancel from library manager console).

      • MOUNTING TAPES INSIDE THE LIBRARY: Tapes inside the D/T3494 library can be mounted by way of the Library Manager Console 'Set-up Stand-Alone Device' pop-up window by using the 'Mount a single volume' selection, and specifying the device and the volser.

      • DeMOUNTING: Select the 'Demount a single volume' selection, specifying the device to unload and demount the IPL tape after Stand-Alone completion.

      • MOUNTING TAPES NOT INSIDE THE LIBRARY: The transient mount operation can be used to mount tapes not inside the D/T3494 library, by way of the 'Library Manager Console Set up Stand-Alone Device' pop up window. Using the 'Mount from Input Station' selection, and specifying the device.
