Abstract
This manual describes the setup and operation of the IBM TotalStorage Ultrium Scalable Tape (3583) Library. The IBM TotalStorage 3583 tape library is a scalable automated tape library incorporating high-performance IBM LTO Ultrium tape drives for the midrange to enterprise open systems environment. With this announcement, tape cartridge capacity has doubled to 400 GB native capacity (800 GB with 2:1 compression) with the new IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium 400 GB data cartridge, and drive performance has more than doubled to 80 MB/sec native data transfer rate with the new LTO Ultrium 3 tape drives. The Ultrium 3 tape drives can read and write LTO Ultrium 2 data cartridges and read LTO Ultrium 1 data cartridges. Ultrium 3 drives and cartridges can be resident in the same 3583 library with LTO Ultrium 1 and Ultrium 2 tape drives and data cartridges.
LTO Ultrium 3 tape drives come in LVD Ultra160 SCSI and 2 Gbps switched fabric Fibre channel features to attach to a wide spectrum of open system servers. 3583 features, in addition to native switched fabric Fibre channel drive attachment, include patented Multi-Path architecture, the ability to partition the library into three logical libraries, and optional Control Path Failover, and Data Path Failover and Load Balancing. Existing and installed 3583 Tape Libraries may also be upgraded with these new enhancements and features.
Storage and tape management for the 3583 is provided by software such as Tivoli Storage Manager and other industry-leading compatible software offerings.
The 3583 comes standard with a bar code reader and as a stand-alone unit. The 3583 models feature cartridge slot storage capacities of 18, 36, and 72 cartridges, providing total Ultrium 3 capacities of 7.2 terabyte (TB), 14.4 TB, and 28.8 TB of native data. With compression, the largest model of the 3583, the Model L72, can store 57.6 TB of data. The Ultrium Scalable tape library 3583 Models L18 and L36 can be field upgraded to increase their capacity up to 72 cartridges and six drives. With an optional feature, the 3583 can be mounted in an industry-standard 19-inch rack.
