Problem

The M5100 and M5200 Series of IBM ServeRAID controllers can be used with the following Cache Flash memory modules: The 512 MB and bigger Flash Memory Modules for the M5100 and the M5200 ServeRAID Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) is a memory module that consistsof 'conventional' cache memory and flash memory. The Cache Vault Power Module (CVPM), which is a capacitor and not a battery, fulfills two (2) roles in the event of power loss: It provides power the 'conventional' cache memory in case of power failure. The CVPM has enough energy in it to take the data that is in cache and offload it onto the on-board USB storage on the memory module itself.

Symptom

The M5100 and M5200 Series of IBM ServeRAID controllers can be used with the following Cache Flash memory modules:

  • ServeRAID M5100 Series 512 MB Flash/RAID 5 Upgrade, option part number 81Y4487, any replacement part number
  • ServeRAID M5100 Series 1 GB Flash/RAID 5 Upgrade, option part number 81Y4559, any replacement part number
  • ServeRAID M5100 Series 2 GB Flash/RAID 5 Upgrade, option part number 47C8670, any replacement part number
  • ServeRAID M5200 Series 1 GB Flash/RAID 5 Upgrade, option part number 47C8660, any replacement part number
  • ServeRAID M5200 Series 2 GB Flash/RAID 5 Upgrade, option part number 47C8664, any replacement part number
  • ServeRAID M5200 Series 4 GB Flash/RAID 5 Upgrade, option part number 47C8668, any replacement part number

The 512 MB and bigger Flash Memory Modules for the M5100 and the M5200 ServeRAID Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) is a memory module that consists of 'conventional' cache memory and flash memory. The Cache Vault Power Module (CVPM), which is a capacitor and not a battery, fulfills two (2) roles in the event of power loss:

  1. It provides power the 'conventional' cache memory in case of power failure.


  2. The CVPM has enough energy in it to take the data that is in cache and offload it onto the on-board USB storage on the memory module itself.

The conventional cache ensures high performance. The flash memory ensures that it holds the data without needing power indefinitely in case of power loss.

The CVPM is only for the Cache Flash Memory upgrades. The CVPM will not work with standard cache memory. The battery (iBBU) kit will not work with any Cache Flash Memory.

The CVPM, previously called SuperCAP, is a capacitor and not a regular battery.
