What are the differences between IBM Semeru Java Certified Edition (CE) versus IBM Semeru Open Edition (OE)?

IBM Semeru Runtimes is available in two editions with different licenses:

IBM Semeru Runtime™ Certified Edition has an IBM license and is a Java Platform, Standard Edition compatible implementation.
IBM Semeru Runtime Open Edition has an open source license

This FAQ has been opened to address some of the main high level differences between the two Editions

Answer

The IBM Semeru Runtime Certified Edition and IBM Semeru Runtime Open Edition are 100% functionally compatible; the exact same functional components are used to produce a release for both editions. The only significant differences between the two editions are the license and whether certification testing has been applied. There have also been changes made in the system properties that identify the Open Edition versus the Certified Edition that, for example, produce different output when running java -version or when using the -XshowSettings command line option.

License

The IBM Semeru Open Edition has an Open Source license (GPLv2+classpath exception).

The IBM Semeru Certified Edition has an IBM license that may have specific additional product terms when it is included in an IBM product . When IBM Semeru Certified Edition is bundled with an IBM product, please see the IBM product’s license for details of any such additional product terms.

Certification Testing

The IBM Semeru Runtime Certified Edition has undergone and passed the certification testing required to verify that it is compatible with the Java Platform, Standard Edition.

The IBM Semeru Runtime Open Edition has not been tested for certification.

Other Considerations

Please be aware that there is no Semeru Runtimes Open Edition for the z/OS platform. However, there is a Semeru Runtimes Open Edition for zLinux.

The open edition may be released earlier than the certified edition due to the additional requirement for Certification testing.
