This tip contains instructions for retrieving LTO dump logs from IBM System x LTO tape drives to help diagnose tape-related issues.

This tip contains instructions for retrieving LTO dump logs from IBM System x LTO tape drives to help diagnose tape-related issues.

Affected configurations

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, any service pack
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, any service pack

Workaround

Backup Application Consideration

Check the documentation of the backup application if the program locks the LTO tape drive for exclusive access.

Actions for the following backup applications:

a) CA ARCserve - stop the tape engine prior to collecting the LTO dump and start it again afterwards.
b) Backup Exec - stop all Backup Exec services prior to collecting the LTO dump and start them again afterwards.

Close the backup application prior to performing any of the following actions.

Instructions for Windows 2000 up to and including SP3
This section applies to these tape drives:

  • IBM 100/200 GB LTO Gen 1 tape drive (Full-High), p/n 00N8016, any replacement part number
  • IBM 200/400 GB LTO Gen 2 tape drive (Full-High), p/n 59P6744
  • IBM 400/800 GB LTO Gen 3 tape drive (Full-High), p/n 25R0012 and p/n 39M5657, any replacement part number (where p/n = part number, replacement part number = Field Replaceable Unit)

For Windows 2000 download the drivers from support bulletin MIGR-56848:

  1. Install the IBM Ultrium LTO Tape Drive device drivers in Device Manager.

  2. Go into the Windows NT/2000 Services tab and record the associated tape software services that are set to Automatic and change them to Manual.

    Note:     Make sure the tape backup program is not in the Startup Folder.

  3. Exit the MMC, shutdown and reboot the server.

  4. Once the server is back up, run the NTUTIL program from a MSDOS prompt.

  5. Select (1) for Manual Test and press enter.

  6. Select (20) to open the tape drive device and press enter.

  7. Select (1) for open module (RW) and press enter.

  8. Select (81) to read dump and press enter.

  9. Enter name, for example, DRIVE1, instead of default dump.000 and press enter twice.

  10. If users have multiple tape drives, continue following the steps below. If not, proceed to step 16.

  11. Select (1) to set device special file by typing the following and pressing enter twice. Users must do this for each tape drive.
    \\.\tapeX (X=drive number 1, 2, and so on . . .)

  12. Select (20) to open the tape drive device and press enter.

  13. Select (1) for open module (RW) and press enter.

  14. Select (81) to read dump and press enter.

  15. Enter name, for example, DRIVE2, instead of default dump.000 and press enter twice.

  16. Select (99) to return to the main menu.

  17. Select (9) to exit the NTUTIL Diagnostic Program.

  18. Go back into the Windows NT/2000 Services tab and set the recorded tape drive services back to Automatic.

    Note:     The DRIVE1 and/or DRIVE2 dump files are located in the directory where the NTUTIL Diagnostic program was started and should average about 188k each. Users should forward these files to the IBM xSeries HelpCenter for review.

Users must now uninstall the IBM Ultrium LTO Tape Drive drivers.

  1. Uninstall both IBM Ultrium LTO Tape Drives from under the Tape Drive section in Device Manager.

  2. Go to the Start Menu, Run, and type (%systemroot%\inf)

  3. Locate the files OEMx.inf and OEMx.pnf. (x = number, e.g. OEM10.inf and OEM10.pnf)

  4. Right click these files and open in a Notebook Pad.

  5. Look for the *.inf file that shows this title on the top:
    MAGTAPE.INF - This file contains descriptions of all IBM LTO tape drives.

  6. Once located this file, make sure that no installation Windows are open to install tape drivers, and move the OEMx.inf and OEMx.pnf files into a separate directory and rename them to *.inf.old and *.pnf.old.

    Note: If these drivers are needed for future dumps, just insert them back into the original directories.

  7. Restart the server, and now both IBM Ultrium LTO Tape Drives show under 'Other Devices' within Windows 2000 or 'driver not installed' in Windows NT.

Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows 2003
This section applies to these tape drives:

  • IBM 100/200 GB LTO Gen 1 tape drive (Full-High), p/n 00N8016, any replacement part number
  • IBM 200/400 GB LTO Gen 2 tape drive (Full-High), p/n 59P6744
  • IBM 400/800 GB LTO Gen 3 tape drive (Full-High), p/n 25R0012 and p/n 39M5657, any replacement part number
  • IBM Half-high LTO 3 SAS tape drive, p/n 43W8478, any replacement part number
  • IBM Half-high LTO 4 SAS tape drive, p/n 44E8895, any replacement part number

Notes:

  1. Only the IBM 100/200 GB LTO Gen 1 tape drive (Full-High) and IBM 200/400 GB LTO Gen 2 tape drive (Full-High) are supported with Windows 2000.
  2. Only 32 bit versions of Windows are supported.
  3. For IBM Half-high LTO 4 SAS tape drive ITDT v2.0 is required. This can be obtained from IBM technical support. In v2.0 collecting LTO logs done via the Dump command. See the attached PDF file for further details.

Collect a Firmware Dump. Archive all files from the output directory into a single standard .ZIP file.

  • Windows 2003 32-bit and 64-bit

For the IBM 400/800 GB LTO Gen 3 tape drive (Full-High), the IBM Half-high LTO 3 SAS tape drive, and the IBM Half-high LTO 4 SAS tape drive obtain from IBM technical support ITDT v4.0.

Collect a LTO Dump. Archive all files from the output into a single standard .ZIP file.
