IBM i2 Analyst's Notebook - Data import: How to display mutiple links between two entities on the chart

How To

Summary

The data can be imported into IBM i2 Analyst's Notebook. The data imported into i2 Analyst's Notebook takes the form of Entities, Links and Properties. At times, the entities are connected by different links, and the user might want to see each link, on the chart, for the purpose of analysis. This technote uses a sample use case to demonstrate how to display multiple links between entities, when the data is imported into i2 Analyst's Notebook to be displayed on the chart.

Steps

The "Multiple" option in the "Multiplicity of Connection" window can be used to display multiple links on the chart.

Here is a sample use case:

For example, we have a csv file that contains two entities; Bill and Mary.

Bill and Mary are connected by two links; a telephone number, and also a relationship called "friend". In this example, we are going to import the csv file into i2 Analyst's Notebook, and the objective is to display both links (the telephone number and "friend") on the chart, between Bill and Mary.

Step 1: In IBM i2 Analyst's Notebook, go to "Import" -> "Import from file" -> "Create new specification"

Step 2:  Select "Next" -> "Next" -> "Next", until you arrive at the "select design window" (for the purpose of simplifying the demonstration, we are not adding any suffix or prefix). In this particular example, we are just going to pick an association chart, as the format of the design.

Step 3: In the "Assign Column" window, we assign Column 1(Bill) of the csv file to the first entity. Then we assign Column 3 (Mary) of the csv file to the second entity. Finally, we assign column 2 (which contain "friend, and the phone number") to the link.

Step 4: Now click on the link, and make sure to click on the "Multiplicity of Connection" tab. This will open the "Multiplicity of Connection" window. This is where we can edit the link display. The default setting is "directed". But our objective is to displaying multiple links, so make sure to select "multiple", then click "ok".

Step 5: Select "Next' and import the data into i2 Analyst's Notebook. When the data is displayed on the chart, you will see the multiple links, which consists of a link for the phone number, and a link called "friend", between Bill and Mary.
