Abstract
When an IBM i host (Power Systems running IBM i, also known as iSeries, AS/400) is connected to a FlashSystem 840/900 via a switch, the host objects on the FlashSystem will show degraded, even when there are correct, redundant paths between the host and FlashSystem.
Content
Systems Impacted
Any FlashSystem 840 or 900 connected to a Power System running IBM i (not via VIOS). V840 and V9000 are not affected.
Cause
Power Systems running IBM i, only log into one of the canisters at a time (one port). Although the alternate paths are zoned and functional, they are not logged in.
This causes the FlashSystem to show the host as degraded because the FlashSystem requires a host object to have Fibre Channel (FC) logins to a host port via a port on each canister. If a host performs a FC login to only one canister of the FlashSystem, then that host's status is "degraded."
Workaround
If the connection is changed to direct-attached, and the host object is defined so that is has a connection to host via at least one port on each canister, then the host object will show a status of online. However, there is no workaround for a switched connection.
This is working as designed.
