Preventive Service Planning
Abstract
What best practices help expedite solving IBM i 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3 issues reported to the IBM i Global Support Center?

- Apply Current PTF and Firmware Level
V7R1, V7R2, and V7R3 have been in the field for several years. What this means is that IBM was allowed sufficient time to resolve all known defects. These releases are considered stable at current PTF and Firmware levels.
At the minimum, apply the last CUM Package, Database Group, and HIPER package available for your operating system release level listed here:
https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/667303. Additionally, if you are reporting an issue with a specific product or function of the operating system, then apply related group PTFs (such as the Java, HTTP, or BRMS group package).
- Ensure that Tools are Current and Ready to Collect Data
Our MustGather tool (QMGTOOLS) is an easy and quick way to gather many elements of information about your IBM i system. Before using the tool, ensure that the build level is less than six months old. Many other tools, used for diagnosing IBM i issues, require the latest PTF levels. For example, PTFs are required before starting an iDoctor for IBM i collection or issuing a TRCCNN (Communications Trace) command. Staying current on PTFs means that the IBM i Global Support team can use data collection tools without waiting for PTFs to be applied.
- Prepare for IBM i Development Involvement
Some complex cases require numerous hours reviewing data sets to determine whether the problem is related to an existing defect or usage. If it is believed a defect is occurring, we might require assistance from our IBM i development team. If the system is several PTF group levels behind, it is not possible for our development team to investigate code levels that are no longer available. Your support representative will advise you further on specific group PTFs that need to be installed before IBM development can continue the investigation.
