Problem

IBM Forms viewer will not render forms when embedded in Firefox version 43 or higher.

Symptom

The IBM Forms Viewer will not render any forms embedded in Firefox version 43 or higher. The user will either be prompted to save the XFDL file, or an error will occur in older Viewer versions.

Cause

At the end of 2016, Mozilla Firefox will no longer support NPAPI plugins. Changes in Firefox 43 have created additional issues with embedding the Viewer. For version 8.2.1 of the Viewer, support for installing the Viewer NPAPI plugin was removed. Users attempting to embed a new version or the Viewer in Firefox version 43 and higher will be prompted to save the XFDL file. Users attempting to use an older versions of the Viewer will receive an error message.

Resolving The Problem

With Firefox dropping NPAPI support, there is no existing method of embedding the Viewer. When rendering a form, the following options exist:

      • use Firefox ESR 38 (or a version prior to Firefox 43)
      • open the form using a supported version of Internet Explorer
      • open the form in the stand-alone Viewer
